Music Librarian - Ed McKenzie

Ed McKenzie

Ed joined barbershopping with the Tidelanders in Houston, Texas. His first night at chapter meeting, there was a piano in the Rice Hotel ballroom where the chapter rehearsed and that seemed pretty normal, as he had been in choruses and choirs since he was a youngster. However, he soon discovered that this was not any typical vocal group rehearsal as the piano was only used to hold stacks of music. Not a single note was played on it all night. The rehearsal was pretty interesting and the music very enjoyable. Then, the Innsiders (who came in 4th that year) sang after the break and Ed was hooked.

Two guys, (John Pickul and Bob Natoli) asked him to join their quartet and Ed jumped right in. It was later that he realized that John and Bob made it their mission to get new guys into a quartet and infect them with the quartet experience. They also were able to get outstanding coaching for the quartet in the person of John Devine, lead singer of the Innsiders, future director of the chorus, and a long time sparkplug in the Southwest District.

Ed was then stationed in Milwaukee, where he joined the Racine Dairystatesmen and went to International several times with that chorus. From there, the next duty station was Long Beach, CA. From his home, he could reasonably commute to 14 different chapters, 5 of which were Century Chapters (over 100 singers). He selected the Whittier Choralaires, directed by Earl Moon, and immediately was made to feel at home.

While at Whittier, Ed switched from his normal bass to tenor, then bari, singing in several chapter quartets. After three years, he was able to earn a spot on the front row. While there he earned his MBA, using the chapter as the subject of his thesis on volunteer organizations.

After California, he went to College Station, TX, where he founded a local chapter with Bo Allen and Dennis Driscoll.  He also sang in a quartet with them.  In 2003, he moved to Chattanooga, TN, where he joined the Cleveland Scream Machine, co-directed by brothers Chad and Brandon Guyton of 4 Voices.

Ed brought his dad, Allen into the Society (he actually joined the Heralds of Harmony in the 80's) and his brother Scott (currently singing with the Scream Machine chorus of the Cleveland, TN chapter in BHS).

Within the Heralds, Ed serves as music librarian and handles all FINALE music notation projects for the chorus.

Nominating Committee Chairman - Bob Weber

Bob Weber

Bob was graduated from Kean University in Union, NJ 1965 with a BA in education, majoring in Secondary School Social Sciences and a minor in English
While at college, Bob was a member of the Opera Guild and performed in several roles on stage, including productions by Gilbert and Sullivan, and Rodgers and Hammerstein. Two of the roles were “Billy Bigelow” from Carousel and “Lt. Joe Cable”  from South Pacific.
He continued his education by attaining certification in General Elementary Education and thus became qualified to teach Kindergarten through 12th grade.
Throughout his career of thirty-nine years in the field of education, Bob taught World History, US History, World Geography, US Geography, Reading Comprehension, Speed Reading, 5th Grade  General Ed, 4th Grade General Ed, Gifted and Talented Education, Lead Computer Teacher, and retired after several years as Computer Lab Teacher.
Bob supplemented his teaching career as a musician in a wedding and banquet band. In this avocation, he played saxophones and was the lead singer with The Sentimentals, and The Escorts.
He also taught private lessons and at one point in this career he had sixteen students. His sons grew up in a musical home, and music was a part of their lives as early as they can remember.
At the age of 22, Bob became a Free and Accepted Mason, and five years later he was leading his local lodge as Worshipful Master. In 1976, he was appointed RW Grand Marshal for the Grand Lodge of the state of New Jersey.
He was very active in his church, The First Congregational Christian, United Church of Christ in Irvington, NJ. He sang in the choir; taught Sunday School; served as Sunday School Sup’t; served on the Christian Board of Education; and served as Youth Leader. When he moved to south Jersey, there was no church of this denomination nearby, so he organized one. It  has become an integral part of the community.
Bob answered an add for “tenor soloist” at a local Episcopal church in NJ. He was hired, and served there for fifteen years, where he was an active choir member and soloist.
He also sang with the New Jersey Chamber Singers, where he soloed in Handel’s Messiah.
Bob was a member of the Ocean County String Band, where he was proud to serve with his father, who played string bass. The two of them joined up with a banjo player and thrilled the audiences with performances with Bob playing the curved soprano sax.
He joined the Ocean County chapter of SPEBSQSA, and quickly was drafted in a registered quartet, The Four-Gone Conclusion. He served this chapter as baritone section leader and assistant director.
Bob’s sons, Rob and Brian, became involved in the Boy Scouts, and so did Dad. He started as a ‘father-volunteer’ and was soon elevated to Scoutmaster. After getting himself trained, and also his assistants, the district soon grabbed him to be a scoutmaster trainer. He was honored to be selected to serve on the district board. They sent him to Woodbadge School, and he soon became a Woodbadge Instructor. He is honored to be a Woodbadge Beaver.
Bob’s cousin, Don Messler, introduced him to Barbershopping in Gainesville when Bob was visiting family in Florida. After the Webers moved to Florida, Don brought him out to Tampa. It was great to have ‘old family buddies’ back together. However, the best part of this for Bob was to have his son, Brian come along. Brian has become a very active member of the Heralds, and it has been a real treat to share the hobby with him.

For many years, Larry has volunteered as a Marketing & Public Relations instructor for the annual Barbershop Harmony Society Leadership Academy (LEADAC) formerly called COTS.

In his professional life, Larry is a Certified Fund Raising Executive and has served several well known non-profit agencies including the American Cancer Society, Ronald McDonald House, Special Opympics and--most recently--Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA).

A not-so-well-known fact is that BGCA is a youth development organization of over 4,000 Clubs throughout the United States and on military bases around the world helping over 4 Million kids each year learn how to be responsible, caring and productive citizens.  At BGCA Larry served as Regional Director of Planned Giving and also volunteered to help establish  pilot projects in some of the Clubs to introduce youth to the joy of singing as a life-long avocation.

Larry brings a wealth of experience in marketing, public relations, development and BS (that's Barbershop Singing) to our Chapter.
